Integrated spectrally pure lasers for atom cooling and ion manipulation

Logo-label_KT.jpeg

Our group has been developing during the last 5 years key enabling technology to further integrate tunable single frequency laser systems into photonic chips, a milestone that opens the doorway to ion quantum computer scaling with increased simplicity. Their spectral characteristics are tailored to specific ionic species, including the manipulation at the hyperfine and Doppler-free levels.

Targets and ion sources

render_traps.JPG

The heart of an ion source is the target which should assure a fast liberation of large amounts of the target material. The combination with the ion-source produces ion beams which preferably should only contain isotopes from one chemical element. Our group has developed many different advanced target-ion-source combinations, which have allowed to study more than 60 different elements.

RF devices for ion traps

QubiKPhoton

Charged particles and ions are accelerated and manipulated by RF electric fields – the energy they can gain or lose in the process is given by the product voltage times charge. CERN has more than 50 years experience in the design, installation, operation and optimization of radio-frequency systems for the LHC and the test facilities for future large accelerators at CERN. This experience is an invaluable asset for the development of low-cost integrated ion traps.

Cryogenics and ultra-high-vacuum systems

The Cryogenics group at CERN carries out all the tasks related to producing and maintaining very low temperatures for CERN’s installations and equipment. The extreme vacuums inside these pipes are achieved by pumping out all the gasses within them and then coating their insides with layers of a special material called a “getter” to which stray molecules stick. A team from CERN’s vacuum group has recently demonstrated a new method for applying getter coatings to much narrower beam pipes than ever before.

Our aim

CERN is the nest of a myriad of advanced technologies related to quantum computing, from its fundamental building blocks to end-user quantum algorithmic. Our purpose is to teleport these deep technologies to the real world while minimizing their cost and complexity, granting access to the quantum realm to all of humanity.
